Why this, why now

The climate challenge needs shared infrastructure, not one-off apps

Responding to climate change requires solutions that span sectors and solve a variety of challenges. Digital public infrastructure offers reusable building blocks that break down silos between agencies, avoid duplicated effort, and let many actors build on the same trusted foundations.

Launched with the COP30 Presidency, DPI for People and Planet set out to support leaders taking initiative to respond to the DPI opportunity for climate change.

The winners

Five solutions, built in the open

Verified data sharing

Circularise

A trust layer for data you can actually verify.

Digital claims today are like photocopied money — easy to fake, copy, and double-count, because there's no shared system to prove they're real without a costly gatekeeper. Circularise builds a common trust layer that lets anyone create and share a unique, uncopyable proof of data and claims, secured by cryptography rather than a central authority. The result: verifiable data exchange and trade, open to all.

Energy for mobility

Kazam

Hyperlocal green energy, matched to the EVs that need it.

In India's cities, electric-energy products are booming — but generation and access rarely meet, leaving EV drivers without nearby green power. Kazam Buzz is a peer-to-peer energy marketplace connecting EV users to hyperlocal green energy at better prices, closing the gap between where clean energy is produced and where it's used.

Financial assistance

Rahat

Aid that reaches people's phones before disaster strikes.

Climate change threatens to push an additional 132 million people into extreme poverty by 2030, more than half of them in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Rahat, a certified digital public good built by Rumsan, is an open-source platform that builds financial resilience ahead of climate shocks — using mobile phones and blockchain to deliver aid faster, transparently, and directly to the people who need it.

Water & sanitation

Akvo

A unique digital identity for every water point.

Over two billion people lack safe drinking water, and fragmented data is a major, often overlooked reason — up to 40% of water points are broken at any given time. Akvo's Unique WASH ID gives every water and sanitation asset a digital identity, creating a single source of truth. It connects existing databases without replacing them and opens a public API for governments, NGOs, and innovators to build on verified data.

Carbon markets

TrustCarbon

Verifiable carbon credits, straight from a farmer's phone.

Carbon projects depend on verification — proving trees were planted, forests protected, and emissions actually reduced — yet that verification is often broken. TrustCarbon is technical infrastructure connecting farmers, developers, auditors, certifiers, and methodologists. Smallholder farmers in Brazil submit photos from their phones, and AI validates the vegetation on the land, letting them verify credits and reach global carbon markets.

What we looked for

Open by default

Solutions built as open-source digital public goods, so any country or community can adopt, adapt, and trust them.

Infrastructure, not silos

Reusable building blocks that connect existing systems and open ecosystems for others to build on, rather than closed, single-purpose tools.

People and planet together

Measurable climate impact paired with inclusion — reaching smallholder farmers, EV drivers, and vulnerable communities directly.

Bias for action

Working solutions already in the field — piloting, reaching beneficiaries, and backed by credible partners — not concepts on paper.
